FOUND by Henry J. Simonds
September 3rd – October 1st, 2015
Reception: September 10th 6-8pm
Galerie Protégé is pleased to present FOUND by Henry J. Simonds. Simonds is a New York-based artist and filmmaker who works extensively with found objects and derivative materials. He was previously featured in the gallery’s debut exhibition, transFIGURE, and is excited to return to mount this solo show of new works.
FOUND by Henry J. Simonds showcases two principal aspects of the artist’s practice: the construction and documentation of temporary environmental installations and the experimental repurposing of found materials into sculptures and assemblages. In his studio practice, Simonds finds inspiration in the mundane. Approaching his work with thoughtfulness, he celebrates beauty and humor and discovers the unique qualities inherent in the everyday objects and materials he uses. He places them in a new context and gives them deeper meaning, thus granting them new life as cultural forms.
The environmental installations - which the artist refers to as Geo-Tags, a nod to graffiti and their geographical nature - are represented here in the form of photographic documentation. Simonds’ belief is that the true works exist as temporary interventions in the landscape and that their value is in their possibility. Time, the conditions, and their locations mean that few, if any, may have the opportunity to experience these interventions as they were left; but the possibility of their discovery, and the thought of a potential viewer being confronted with a surprising, unique aesthetic experience is thrilling.
FOUND by Henry J. Simonds will be on view September 3rd through October 1st, 2015 with a reception on September 10th from 6 to 8pm.
