Galerie Protégé is pleased to present Heaven, the second solo exhibition for artist Paul Thomas at the gallery, a year after his unprecedented and nearly sold out show. Unabashedly beautiful in appearance, Thomas’ work is a celebration of the full chromatic expanse and a visual meditation on the pictorial handling of space and color. His work is rooted in the style of Postmodern masters like Paul Jenkins and Helen Frankenthaler—artists he contemplates with every application of paint.
Thomas conceives abstract works on canvas and paper with a primary interest in exploring the relationship between color, form and spatial differentiation. Using thin washes of acrylic pigments against white grounds, the artist renders compositions reminiscent of flowing, translucent fabrics of many brilliant colors that capture and refract light. Both gentle and resonant, the works draw the viewer into the world of their internal play and irresolute meanings. Thomas has established an organic yet sophisticated system of surface dynamics, spatial ambiguities and lush color harmonies that evoke a sense of transient, atmospheric, and compositional structure.
“Paul Thomas' Heaven gives us a revealing answer, unique perspective and clear vision, brought forth by an unmistakable glory of well-calculated shapes and an explosion of color… Thomas' prophetic images are conducive to meditation. Through his technique, he brings forth well chosen colored ideas, which in time become addictive and manage to alleviate in us the deepest ingrained sorrow. The paintings form a harmonious whole. The vivid, wild, sensual, elegant and colorful meditations, worked unhurriedly, resonate within us, and in return seek comfort in the utopic heavens.” Mariana Carpinisan. Curator/Art Critic/Art History Professor
